8 min read

Small printers carry a bigger workload than they used to. A desktop device may need to print high-volume color jobs, support mobile users, connect cleanly to cloud workflows, and fit into a security plan that covers the entire organization.

Canon U.S.A. is addressing that shift with the new imageFORCE C1700 Series, a set of A4 color printers built for businesses that need compact devices without giving up speed, connectivity, or manageability. The lineup includes four models: two multifunction printers and two single-function printers, with print speeds ranging up to 45 pages per minute or up to 55 pages per minute depending on the model.

The launch also strengthens Canon’s broader imageFORCE portfolio, which now spans compact desktop devices through higher-volume office systems. That matters for organizations trying to keep print devices consistent across locations, departments, and workloads.

The C1700 Series gives Canon’s desktop lineup more range

The imageFORCE C1700 Series includes four models, each aimed at a different mix of output needs and workflow requirements.

The C1743F and C1743P replace the imageCLASS X MF1538C II and LBP1538C II printers, respectively. Their up to 45 ppm print speed puts them in a practical range for busy teams that need fast color output from a compact device.

The C1752F and C1752P extend the family with faster output, reaching up to 55 ppm. That extra speed gives organizations a better fit for heavier desktop print volumes without moving to a larger shared system.

The split between multifunction and single-function models is also useful. Not every print location needs scanning or copying. Some environments only need fast, reliable output. Others need a device that can handle scan workflows, cloud destinations, and document capture. Canon’s four-model approach lets buyers match the device to the job instead of overbuying features for every location.

For many organizations, that distinction can help in places such as:

  • Satellite locations that need compact color printing

  • Departmental print areas with steady daily output

  • Shared resource rooms where scanning and printing are both required

  • Environments that need consistent device behavior across several locations

  • Workflows where color documents must be produced close to the people using them

The key point is choice. The C1700 Series does not treat the desktop category as one-size-fits-all. It offers speed and function options while staying within a unified product family.

Speed is only part of the productivity story

Print speed is easy to understand, but productivity depends on more than pages per minute. A device also has to fit the way people send jobs, scan documents, and manage repeat tasks.

The C1700 Series starts with strong output speeds for its class. Up to 45 ppm on the C1743 models and up to 55 ppm on the C1752 models can make a real difference when teams regularly produce packets, forms, training materials, reports, labels, or color reference documents.

Still, the bigger value comes from how the devices fit into daily work.

The multifunction models, the C1743F and C1752F, are designed to support print, copy, scan, and related document workflows. Canon also points to the upcoming addition of Authorized Send Compact, described as scan-to-cloud functionality for the multifunction models. Once available, that feature is intended to make cloud-based scanning and printing easier for organizations that already rely on digital document storage.

That matters because scanning is often where paper workflows slow down. A document may start on paper, then need to move to a shared folder, cloud location, document system, or approval route. A compact multifunction device that supports these paths can reduce the friction between physical documents and digital processes.

The single-function models, the C1743P and C1752P, take a more focused role. They are built for print output rather than scan-based workflows. That can be the right choice in print-heavy areas where scanning is handled elsewhere or not needed at all.

Canon also notes compatibility with Canon and third-party solutions, including uniFLOW Online. That adds value for organizations that use print management tools to track usage, control access, support secure release, or manage fleets across locations.

In practical terms, the series is built to handle two common needs at once:

Fast local output

Teams can print color documents at speeds suited to active work areas.

Connected workflows

Multifunction models can support more modern scan and cloud paths as those features become available.

A faster printer can save minutes. A better-connected printer can save the repeated handoffs that slow work down.

Dual-band Wi-Fi makes deployment more flexible

Connectivity is one of the most important details in a compact printer, especially when devices may be placed in different locations with different network conditions.

The imageFORCE C1700 Series includes standard dual-band Wi-Fi with support for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. That gives IT teams and administrators more flexibility when connecting devices to a network.

The 2.4 GHz band is often useful for range and compatibility. The 5 GHz band can be helpful in environments where less congestion or faster local wireless performance is preferred. The best setup depends on the network, building layout, device placement, and traffic patterns.

With support for both bands built in, the C1700 Series can adapt to a wider range of network environments. That is especially useful for organizations with mixed spaces, older infrastructure in some areas, or changing wireless standards across locations.

This kind of connectivity also supports more flexible placement. A small printer may need to sit near a work area, in a copy alcove, in a back room, or near a service counter. Wired networking is still valuable in many environments, but wireless support can reduce placement limits when a wired drop is not practical.

Connectivity also affects fleet growth. If an organization adds devices over time, dual-band Wi-Fi can make it easier to install new units in different settings without creating a completely different setup process each time.

For a desktop-class device, that flexibility can be just as important as the hardware footprint.

Security features are built for managed environments

Printers are part of the network. That means they need to be considered in security planning, access control, and compliance efforts.

Canon highlights an extensive set of security features in the imageFORCE C1700 Series, including a feature called Security Environment Estimation. This feature uses a machine learning-based estimation algorithm to analyze the operating environment and recommend security settings.

That wording matters. The feature is designed to recommend settings based on the environment. It does not replace IT policy, security review, or compliance work. Instead, it can help administrators identify suitable configuration choices and reduce the chance that security settings are overlooked during setup.

For many organizations, printer security includes questions such as:

  • Who can access the device

  • How print and scan jobs are handled

  • What network services are enabled

  • How administrator controls are protected

  • How the device fits into broader compliance requirements

  • How security settings stay consistent across a fleet

A recommendation-based feature can be useful because printer configuration often involves many settings. Some are easy to miss when teams are deploying multiple devices or replacing older models. A tool that estimates the environment and suggests settings can help create a more consistent starting point.

Compatibility with print management systems such as uniFLOW Online can also play a role in security planning. Managed print tools can help organizations apply rules, manage users, and support controlled access to print functions. The exact setup depends on the organization’s systems and policies, but compatibility gives buyers more room to fit the C1700 Series into existing print environments.

This is especially relevant as more organizations standardize device families. A mixed fleet can become hard to manage if each printer model has a different interface, security menu, and support path. By adding more desktop choices within the imageFORCE portfolio, Canon gives organizations another option for building a more consistent fleet from small devices to larger systems.

Sustainability-focused design is part of the device strategy

Canon is also positioning the C1700 Series around sustainability-focused design elements. The company points to the increased use of recycled materials, including iron and select plastic components.

That is a practical direction for printer design. Business devices need to remain durable and reliable, but manufacturers are also under pressure to reduce environmental impact where possible. Using recycled materials in select parts is one way to address that without changing the core expectations for performance.

The sustainability message here is measured rather than dramatic. Canon is not presenting the C1700 Series as a complete answer to environmental concerns. Instead, it is adding material choices that can help reduce impact while maintaining the performance expected from business printers.

For organizations evaluating print devices, sustainability can show up in several ways:

  • Materials used in the device

  • Device life span and serviceability

  • Fleet consolidation

  • Energy use settings

  • Print management policies

  • Supplies and recycling programs

  • Right-sizing devices to actual output needs

The C1700 Series touches the first point directly through recycled materials. It can also support broader fleet decisions because it gives organizations several speed and function options within one portfolio.

Right-sizing is often overlooked. A device that is too small for the workload may cause delays and early replacement. A device that is too large for the location may waste space and budget. A compact device with the right speed, connectivity, and workflow support can help organizations match equipment more closely to how it will be used.

The C1700 Series fits into Canon’s broader imageFORCE platform

The launch is not just about four new desktop printers. It also expands the imageFORCE portfolio as a more unified platform.

Canon’s imageFORCE lineup spans compact desktop devices through high-volume office systems. That range can help organizations that want a more consistent user experience across different device types. When printers share a common platform approach, users may face fewer differences when moving between devices, and administrators may have a clearer path for support and fleet management.

The Canon Expands imageFORCE Portfolio With New C1700 Series Printers announcement points to a larger strategy: give organizations desktop options that still align with the rest of the Canon print environment.

That can matter during refresh cycles. Many businesses do not replace every printer at once. They may upgrade a few locations, replace end-of-life devices, or add faster models where output has grown. A broader portfolio gives them more ways to modernize without creating a patchwork of unrelated devices.

The C1700 Series also helps bridge a common gap. Some businesses need the features normally associated with larger shared devices, but they need them in a smaller footprint. The new models bring together several of those priorities:

  • Fast A4 color output

  • Multifunction and single-function choices

  • Dual-band wireless connectivity

  • Security setting recommendations

  • Compatibility with Canon and third-party solutions

  • Sustainability-focused material choices

  • Fit within a larger Canon device family

That mix makes the series most relevant for organizations that need compact printers to behave like managed business systems, not isolated desktop gadgets.

What the launch means for business printing

The imageFORCE C1700 Series shows how far desktop printing has moved beyond basic output. A compact printer now has to support networks, policies, cloud workflows, user expectations, sustainability goals, and fleet planning.

Canon’s new lineup addresses those needs with four models that give buyers clear choices. The C1743F and C1743P serve the up to 45 ppm tier and replace earlier imageCLASS X models. The C1752F and C1752P add faster up to 55 ppm options for higher-volume needs. Multifunction models support broader document workflows, while single-function models keep the focus on print output.

The larger takeaway is consistency. By extending the imageFORCE portfolio into more desktop use cases, Canon gives organizations a way to build print environments that are easier to manage and better matched to changing work patterns.

For businesses reviewing their print fleets, the C1700 Series is a reminder to look beyond speed alone. The smarter question is whether each device fits the full job: output volume, connection needs, security expectations, scan workflows, and long-term fleet plans. On that score, Canon’s newest desktop additions give decision-makers more room to choose the right tool for each setting.
